Flopcast 713: Memorial Show Part 1 - Norm!
We do this every year - time to look back and remember the people we lost in 2025 from the world of pop culture and beyond. This week's list includes favorites from music (Roberta Flack, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone), television (Ruth Buzzi, Loretta Swit, George Wendt), movies (Gene Hackman, David Lynch, Val Kilmer), comics (Peter David, Jules Feiffer, Jim Shooter), and many more. And we're not done, so come back for Part 2 next week. As always, bring plenty of beverages.
Show Notes
Dana Gould paid tribute to David Lynch on his podcast, as did our friend Kevin Cafferty on The Best Stuff in the World.
As a young fan, Kevin treasured The Great Comic Book Heroes by Jules Feiffer. Not mentioned during our recording is a classic children's book he illustrated: The Phantom Tollbooth, loved by the Mayor.
Further research revealed that it was Sigourney Weaver who sang Baby, It's Cold Outside with David Johansen (performing as Buster Poindexter) on SNL.
George Wendt is linked to Boston by his role on Cheers, which gives this episode its title, but his recurring appearances on SNL planted him firmly in Chicago. Here's a fun article about the latter.
We highly recommend Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson's documentary about Sly Stone.
Val Kilmer's cameo in Jay & Silent Bob Reboot was a lovely surprise. We're anticipating a big emotional punch when we finally get around to watching Val.
The incredibly prolific Jean Marsh portrayed a streak of fantasy villains in the 80s: Bavmorda in Willow, Morgaine in Doctor Who (one of her three roles on the show), and Mombi in Return to Oz.
